One of my earliest Jiu Jitsu memories is of getting absolutely wrecked by a female blue belt. I remember being in awe of the power of Jiu Jitsu, while simultaneously doubting my own ability to ever get to that level. If someone had told me then that I would someday be a purple belt, I probably would have laughed in their face. I’m proud to say that in the past 5 years I have transformed from that self-doubting white belt into an enthusiastic purple belt who is determined to someday have a black belt tied around his waist.
What is strange is that I cannot link that transformation to one specific thing. It has come from the combination of many things: The relationships I’ve built at Elite MMA. The constant encouragement from my training partners and friends. The opportunities to share what I’ve learned with others and help them find success. Witnessing others grow beyond levels they previously thought impossible. Being challenged by feelings of stagnation and failure. Feeling empowered by growth, and the accomplishment of goals. Reminders of how far I’ve come, and how much potential is still out there in front of me.
If you are reading this and having feelings of self-doubt, like I once did, then I hope my story encourages you to keep going. It is a very challenging journey, but it’s one that will reward you in ways you cannot even imagine. Remember, you are fortunate to be in a community that will not let you fail, as long as you are willing to do your part.
Lastly, to my Kids BJJ students and their parents… teaching you has been one of my favorite parts of this journey, and definitely something I never would have dreamed possible 5 years ago. It is truly an honor to be called your Coach. Spending those hours with you on the mats has become a highlight of my week. I love celebrating your achievements, and watching you grow stronger and more confident each week. I am so grateful to be a part of your Jiu Jitsu journey and that you are a part of mine. I see so much potential in each of you and I have no doubt that you can all accomplish great things in this world. Never forget to be successful by helping others be successful!
