What classes do you teach: Fundamentals of BJJ at the Westheimer location. High school math and science tutor.
What martial art(s) have trained in:
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu 1999 – present
Muay Thai/Kickboxing 2003 – present
Ketsugo Karate 1994 – 1997
Kempo Karate in Japan 1980s
Judo in Japan 1980s
Number of years of training martial arts: I started training in Judo and karate in Japan at the request of my parents when I was very little to build confidence, learn self-discipline and for self-defense. I continued my karate/kickboxing training while studying engineering in college and began BJJ when I moved to Houston to work for an oil company.
When did you start teaching at Elite MMA? I have been teaching the fundamentals class for the past year and have assisted the primary instructors for the last couple years.
What is a memorable moment for you at Elite MMA? One of my most memorable moments at Elite MMA was the day I realized the school is not just a studio to learn martial arts, but it is also a place where I have built true, lasting friendships.
In your own words why do you enjoy Elite MMA? I enjoy training here because it is a forum where I can focus my mind on one particular moment in time and forget about work-related stresses. I always feel better after a class and my mind is better conditioned to handle any and all circumstances afterwards.
Do you have any martial arts accomplishments that you are proud of and why? I am proud for just entering a tournament for the mere sake of competition. With my busy schedule (we all have this in common), I consider it an accomplishment to take time off on a Saturday and see how well I can adapt the techniques I have learned in class in a timed format with opponents of unknown skill.
What hobbies do you enjoy and why? I enjoy learning new things: techniques, science, anything. I also love to read fictional books, especially sci-fi.
Any memorable family moments that you would like to share? The birth of my daughter this past summer is the greatest moment in my life so far.
Academic accomplishments: B. Sc. in Marine Systems Engineering, master’s in Acupuncture and Herbal medicine, and completing 2nd M. Sc. in Nutritional chemistry.
